What Do UK Universities Actually Look For?

UK admissions are academically focused. That means your grades and your subject knowledge matter most. But it is not just about being a good student—it is about showing that you care deeply about what you want to study.

Here is what top UK universities prioritize:

75%

Strong Academics

Whether you are doing IB, A-Levels, or a national board, your academic performance is the biggest factor. They look closely at predicted scores, transcripts, and subject prerequisites.

10%

Supercurricular Exploration

This means everything you do beyond the syllabus that shows genuine interest. MOOCs, lectures, research papers, competitions, or summer schools in your subject are highly recommended.

10%

Passion & Clarity

Your personal statement is where you explain why you love the subject and back it up with evidence. If your course requires an interview, they will want to hear it in your words too.

5%

Relevant Extracurriculars

Activities like music, volunteering, or leadership matter if they help explain your subject interest or academic qualities. If not, they are secondary.

What You Will Need to Apply

UK universities use a centralized system called UCAS, which allows you to apply to up to five courses at once.

Here is what a strong application usually includes:

Academic Documents

  • Academic transcripts and predicted grades
  • A subject-specific reference letter from a teacher
  • Results of any required entrance exams

Personal Statement

  • One personal statement (used for all five choices)
  • Subject-focused content showing passion
  • Evidence of genuine interest and exploration

Additional Requirements

  • An interview (if applying to Oxbridge or selective courses)
  • English language test (IELTS/TOEFL) for international students

Entrance Exams You Might Need

These depend on what course you are applying to. Some examples:

  • LNAT

For Law at places like LSE, UCL, and King's

  • BMAT

    For Medicine

  • UCAT

    For Medicine

  • MAT

    For Maths-heavy courses

  • STEP

    For Maths-heavy courses

  • TMUA

  • ENGAA

    For Engineering at Oxbridge

  • NSAA

    For Natural Sciences at Oxbridge

  • ECAA

    For Economics at Oxbridge

If you are unsure which exams apply to you, we will walk you through it.

Important Deadlines (and When to Start)

The earlier you begin, the more confident (and less rushed) the journey will feel.
